Timor-Leste is experiencing a low level HIV epidemic. There are an estimated 623 people living with HIV (PLHIV). Of these, 47% (291) are aware of their HIV status, and 40% (249) are on antiretroviral therapy.

Sex workers: 1 688
People who inject drugs: 53
Transgender: unknown
In general, there is a low paucity of information regarding the dynamics and key drivers of the epidemic.

Through peer support models and engagement with the local Ministry of Health’s National Strategic Plan for HIV, Estrela+ predominantly advocates for the rights of people living with HIV. They advocate for the reduction of stigma and discrimination against key populations, including PLHIV, youth, MSM, transgender individuals and sex workers, and have contributed to trainings conducted for health staff around providing more inclusive and sensitive care to at-risk populations.
